His son Julian Jr. operated the distillery from 1964 until the family sold it in 1972, then formed J.P. Van Winkle and Son and created the Old Rip Van Winkle label. Julian III took over in 1981 and rebuilt the family business. Buffalo Trace bought the W.L. Weller label in 1999, and beginning May 2002 has produced Van Winkle bourbons using Pappy’s exact recipe.
