Cruz de Fuego Madrecuishe
Description
Cruz de Fuego Madrecuishe is a wild-harvested artisanal mezcal from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, made by Margarita Blas and Carlos Mendez under the Productores del Buen Agave banner. Madrecuishe (Agave karwinskii) is a long-stemmed wild agave varietal with thick fibers — prized for the elegant, mineral, and slightly earthier mezcal it produces compared to the more common Espadin.
Karwinskii varietals like Madrecuishe take 12–20 years to mature and are wild-harvested rather than cultivated. The longer maturation produces a more concentrated, mineral-driven, and structurally distinct spirit. Cruz de Fuego’s fully traditional production preserves these wild varietal characteristics through the earthen oven, stone tahona, wood fermentation, and copper pot still distillation chain.
