Description

Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky is a unique expression that sits at the intersection of malt and grain whisky categories — made from 100% malted barley (like a single malt) but distilled in Nikka's Coffey continuous still rather than a pot still, which technically classifies it as grain whisky under industry regulations despite the all-malt grain bill, producing rich maltiness and silky texture that no standard grain whisky achieves.

Developed in 2013 as part of Nikka's ongoing experiments with what their Coffey still can produce, Coffey Malt explores the question of what happens when you run malted barley through a continuous still rather than a pot still. The answer is a spirit that has the grain-richness and sweetness that malted barley provides — but with the lighter, more textured character of Coffey still distillation rather than the heavier, oilier result of pot still distillation. Matured in old casks to enhance the rich maltiness and complexity without adding excessive new wood character, the result is silky-textured and complex in a way that defies its grain whisky classification. Old cask maturation preserves the Coffey Malt spirit character rather than transforming it into something more conventional.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Rich maltiness, sweet grain, and the distinctive Coffey still complexity — more approachable than pot still malt whisky
  • Palate: Silky and textured — rich malt character with a complexity that the Coffey still's specific distillation dynamics produce from malted barley
  • Finish: Long and richly malty with lingering grain sweetness

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Coffey Malt classified as grain whisky if it uses 100% malted barley?

Industry classification of whisky as malt or grain is based on the still type, not the grain bill. Malt whisky must be distilled in a pot still. Coffey Malt uses 100% malted barley but is distilled in a Coffey continuous still — so it is classified as grain whisky despite using the same grain as single malt whisky. The resulting spirit is fundamentally different in character from pot still single malt, demonstrating how dramatically the still type affects the final spirit.
