Old Potrero Single Malt Straight Rye Whiskey is a pot-distilled 100% rye malt whiskey from Hotaling & Co. Distillery on San Francisco’s Potrero Hill — aged in handmade, fine-grain charred new American oak barrels for the rich color and the spicy, oak-forward character that charred-barrel maturation produces. Old Potrero is an attempt to recreate the original whiskey of America, marking the return of pot-distilled whiskey in the United States.

By the early 19th century, coopers had developed the practice of allowing the heat used to bend barrel staves to continue until the interior caught fire and became charred — the foundation of the modern American whiskey aging tradition. Old Potrero’s Single Malt Straight Rye uses that charred-barrel American tradition with a 100% rye malt mash bill, producing a different profile from the sister 18th Century expression that uses uncharred (toasted) barrels.
