Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch 7 Scotch Whisky
Description
The Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch 7 is the seventh release of the Tun 1509 program — Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE's selection of 21 hand-picked casks from The Balvenie's warehouse married (combined) in the physical Tun 1509 vat and allowed to integrate for three years, drawing on four American oak barrels, ten sherry butts, and seven hogsheads to produce a rich, intensely fruity, and spiced Speyside single malt at the highest quality tier in The Balvenie range.
Tun 1509 is a physical wooden marriage vessel — a large vat in The Balvenie's warehouse specifically used to combine exceptional casks and allow their characters to integrate over time before bottling. The Tun Marriage process is one of the most thoughtful in Speyside production: rather than simply blending at bottling time, the combined casks spend additional time together in the tun, developing a more unified and harmonious final expression. Each Tun 1509 batch uses a different selection of casks, with the specific ages, cask types, and combinations varying between releases, which is why each batch has a genuinely different character from the previous one.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Rich and intensely fruity — the American oak barrels contributing vanilla and honey, the sherry butts adding dried fruit and spice, and the hogsheads integrating the two influences
- Palate: Spicy outburst leading to deep sherry character with caramel, dried fruit, and warm oak — the 21-cask complexity evident in the layered character
- Finish: Lingering dried fruit, elegant oak, and the honey and vanilla integration of the American oak component

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Tun 1509 different from other Balvenie expressions?
Tun 1509 involves a physical marriage process — the selected casks are combined in the actual Tun 1509 vat and given time to integrate before bottling, rather than being blended at the point of bottling. This integration period produces a more unified, harmonious final expression. Each batch is also entirely unique — the specific cask selection changes with every release.
