Macurichos Mezcal Tepeztate
Description
Macurichos Mezcal Tepeztate is a wild-varietal mezcal from Gonzalo Martinez in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca — one of only a handful of distillers still producing using ancestral methods, including clay pot stills. Tepeztate (Agave marmorata) is among the longest-maturing wild agave varietals — typically 25–30+ years — producing one of the most prized and rare single-varietal mezcal expressions.
Tepeztate grows in rocky, mountainous Oaxacan terrain, with the long maturation cycle producing exceptionally complex floral, herbal, and mineral character. Macurichos’ clay pot still ancestral production technique preserves the distinctive Tepeztate character without the influences of copper, presenting a distinctly textured and mineral-driven expression of this rare wild varietal.
